Mews and Nips: Koko, the Gorilla who loved Cats

Koko, the gorilla famous for her ability to communicate using American sign Language, passed away in her sleep at the age of 46 Tuesday morning. Koko became an icon for interspecies communication. She also loved cats. She actually asked for a cat for Christmas in 1983, and was terribly unhappy when she was given a stuffed animal. For her next birthday, researchers allowed her to choose a kitten. Sadly, “All Ball,” as Koko named the kitten, was killed in a tragic accident six months later. Koko went on to care for many kittens throughout her life. For more about Koko, visit popular Science.

If you missed any of the stories featured on the conscious cat this week, here’s a recap: on Sunday, we celebrated Father’s Day, on Monday, we offered tips on what to do when your cat won’t eat, on Tuesday, we told you how the Assisi loop is helping a cat with stomatitis, on Wednesday, we interviewed cat photographer Andrew Marttila, on Thursday, we featured a new lightweight GPS tracking device, and on Friday, we paid tribute to Ando, Kate Benjamin’s original Hauspanther.

Today’s video shows Koko with some of the kittens she’s raised over the years – enjoy!

Have a great weekend!
