Every January, 1-800-PetMeds Cares™ celebrates change a Pet’s Life Day by helping three adoptable pets receive the medical care they need through the change a Pet’s Life Contest. The first-place winner in this year’s contest is a pug puppy, named Simpson.

Simpson was hit by a automobile at the end of December and suffered a broken pelvis, road rash and a large open wound on his right hind leg, exposing the joint and ligaments of the leg. He barely survived the original accident and was set to be euthanized due to the large amount of damage. Pug Rescue Austin of Austin, Texas, got a call about him from the emergency vet clinic and was able to save him just in time.

The 9-month-old puppy has had a long road to recovery, and he still has a long way to go. The extensive wounds to his right hind leg have healed, and he is currently wearing a cast. He still needs lengthy and expensive orthopedic surgery to fix his broken pelvis and make it possible for him to move around the way a puppy should, freely and without pain.

Simpson is waiting on an appointment with a veterinary specialist to decide on the best surgical solution for him. PRA hopes the surgeon can repair the fractured socket of his pelvis, keeping the femoral head (the top of that leg) in the pelvis socket. This option gives him the best chance at recovering full, normal use of that leg and range of motion. He would be able to go back to normal puppy activities, running and playing with abandon.

Regardless of the procedure the veterinary surgeon decides on, Simpson will spend 6 to 8 weeks quietly recovering from surgery and undergoing physical therapy. After he has healed and had all follow-up appointments with the specialist, he will be up for adoption!

PRA describes Simpson as a sweet, outgoing puppy who never has a bad day, despite all his current health problems. He loves to be carried around and loves everyone he meets. even through all his treatments, the veterinary staff describes him as “the best patient ever”.
